Gaza Ceasefire Talks on Verge of Collapse Amidst Far-Right Israeli Opposition and Deadlocked Negotiations
Efforts to secure a ceasefire in Gaza have hit a roadblock, with the negotiations in Doha reportedly on the brink of collapse. The talks have been marred by internal Israeli opposition, mutual accusations of sabotaging peace efforts, and disagreements over crucial issues between Israel and Hamas.
Israeli Far-Right Opposition to Ceasefire
Israel’s far-right National Security Minister, Itamar Ben-Gvir, has vehemently opposed the ongoing ceasefire talks, claiming they only strengthen Hamas. Ben-Gvir, a prominent figure in Israel’s ultra-nationalist bloc, accused the Israeli government of aiding Hamas by pursuing a deal, insisting that the lives of Israeli soldiers and residents in the south are more important than any normalization or economic agreements.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has summoned Ben-Gvir and Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, both strong opposers of the ceasefire deal, to discuss the potential agreement. Netanyahu is reportedly concerned that Ben-Gvir's Otzma Yehudit party may exit the government if a permanent ceasefire is achieved, potentially destabilizing his coalition.
Deadlocked Negotiations
The ceasefire talks have been stalled due to disagreements over the extent of the Israeli withdrawal from Gaza, with Hamas rejecting an Israeli proposal that would leave around 40 percent of the besieged enclave under Israeli control. Further, the aid distribution method has also become a bone of contention.
Palestinian negotiators are increasingly sceptical that an agreement could be reached in the current round of talks in Doha. Sources close to the negotiations have revealed deadlock over these two key issues. On one hand, Israel wants to keep forces in large parts of the Gaza Strip during the proposed 60-day truce, including a buffer zone
along Gaza's eastern and northern boundary with Israel. On the other hand, Hamas insists on adhering to the withdrawal lines agreed in the January truce, which Israel breached in March.
Reactions and Implications
As the talks teeter on the brink of collapse, both Israel and Hamas have accused each other of intentionally sabotaging the negotiations. The situation has been further complicated by intensified aerial attacks by Israeli forces, resulting in more than 20 deaths in the Gaza Strip on Saturday.
The New York Times alleges that Netanyahu has deliberately prolonged the Gaza war to maintain power, citing pressure from far-right coalition allies as the cause for negotiation slow-downs at crucial moments.
Current Status
Despite the standstill, Donald Trump has expressed optimism about the possibility of a Gaza ceasefire in the coming days after meeting with Netanyahu. Meanwhile, Qatar's foreign ministry spokesperson, Majed Al-Ansari, has urged patience, stating that the negotiations need time
. As the world watches with bated breath, the fate of the ceasefire hangs in the balance.
