Gaza Crisis Deepens: Starvation, Displacement and Violence Escalate Amid Israeli Blockade
Gaza is grappling with an escalating humanitarian crisis as the Israeli blockade enters its 139th day, pushing the enclave to the brink of mass starvation and resulting in widespread displacement, according to various reports. In the latest developments, Israeli attacks have targeted civilians seeking aid, leading to a significant rise in fatalities. The United Nations estimates that over 725,000 people have been displaced since mid-March, with 86.1 percent of the Gaza Strip under Israeli forced displacement threats, leaving residents with nowhere to flee.
Unprecedented Starvation and Displacement
The World Food Programme (WFP) alerted that thousands of Palestinians in Gaza are on the “verge of catastrophic hunger,” with one in three people going days without food. Health officials in Gaza issued a stark warning, stating that hundreds of severely emaciated Palestinians are on the verge of death, their bodies too weak to resist any longer. Recent footage shows children in Gaza searching through rubbish for food, highlighting the extreme levels of hunger.
The Israeli military has issued new forced displacement orders, affecting even densely populated areas. Reports indicate that the Israeli military plans to expand its ground operations, leaving residents with no safe zones to flee to. As a result, large numbers of Palestinians are being displaced multiple times, some more than 10 times.
Rising Death Toll
The death toll continues to rise with widespread reports of Israeli forces opening fire on civilians seeking aid. The death toll from Israeli attacks on Palestinians waiting for humanitarian aid in the Al-Sudaniya area, northwest of Gaza City, has risen to 30, with at least 60 others wounded. Furthermore, at least 20 Palestinians were killed in a crush at a food distribution site in southern Gaza run by the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) after guards used teargas or pepper spray on hungry crowds.
At least 891 Palestinians have been killed trying to get food, since the Israeli-US backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation started operating in the Strip in late May. Among the victims are 71 children who have died from malnutrition and hunger as Israel continues to block humanitarian aid.
International Response
The Euro-Mediterranean Human Rights Monitor has called for US President Donald Trump to face criminal prosecution for being complicit in the controversial aid distribution system in Gaza, where Israeli forces and American contractors have carried out mass killings of starving civilians seeking aid.
In a rare show of solidarity, top Christian leaders in Jerusalem were allowed to enter Gaza, following the Israeli military strike on a Catholic church in Gaza, which resulted in international condemnation.
