US Warns Airlines Over Heightened Military Activity in Venezuelan Airspace
The United States Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has issued a warning to airlines about a potentially hazardous situation
when flying over Venezuela due to the worsening security situation and heightened military activity
in the area. The advisory has prompted several airlines to cancel their flights to the country.
Background
The FAA advisory, effective for 90 days, comes amidst a significant increase in U.S. military presence across the Caribbean. The U.S. Southern Command has deployed bombers, warships, and Marines as part of an expanded campaign targeting drug-trafficking and so-called narco-terrorist
networks operating near Venezuela. This military buildup includes the deployment of the U.S. Navy's largest aircraft carrier, accompanied by a fleet of warships and fighter jets.
Airlines Respond to FAA Warning
Following the FAA's caution, multiple airlines, including Brazilian GOL, Spanish Iberia, Colombia’s Avianca, TAP from Portugal, Chilean Latam, and Carribean from Trinidad and Tobago, have suspended their flights to Caracas indefinitely. The Venezuelan government has also restricted commercial flights to and from the country. However, some airlines continue operations and are closely monitoring the situation in the Venezuelan airspace.
The FAA advisory stated, Operators are advised to exercise caution when operating in the Maiquetia flight information region at all altitudes due to the worsening security situation and heightened military activity in or around Venezuela. Threats could pose a potential risk to aircraft at all altitudes, including during overflight, the arrival and departure phases of flight, and/or airports and aircraft on the ground.
Reactions and Implications
The U.S.'s increased military activity, while aimed at anti-drug operations, has been condemned by Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro. Meanwhile, the airline cancellations and restrictions pose significant logistical and economic challenges for Venezuela.
According to four U.S. officials, Washington is set to expand its Venezuela-related operations, escalating pressure on President Maduro’s government. However, the exact timing or scope of these new operations is yet to be confirmed.
Current Status
The situation in Venezuela remains tense as the U.S. continues to build its military presence in the Caribbean. Flight suspensions have come into effect, following the U.S. regulator's warning of a security risk in the airspace in and around Venezuela. Airlines and passengers are advised to remain vigilant and monitor the situation closely for updates.
