Trump Raises Global Tariffs to 15% Following Supreme Court Ruling
In a swift response to the U.S. Supreme Court's decision against his tariff policy, President Donald Trump announced an increase in global tariffs from 10% to 15%. This new tax on imports from all countries comes less than 24 hours after the court's ruling, which held that Trump's sweeping Liberation Day
tariffs imposed last year exceeded his authority.
Supreme Court's Decision
Last Friday, the Supreme Court invalidated Trump's tariffs in a 6-3 decision. The justices ruled that the 1977 International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) does not give Trump the authority to impose what he described as reciprocal tariffs on almost every country. In response, Trump immediately introduced a new 10% global tariff under separate legislation, using the Trade Act of 1974, before raising it to 15%.
Trump's Tariff Move
In the wake of the Supreme Court's decision, Trump announced a new global tariff under different legislation. The 15% tariff was initially set at 10%, offering some relief for businesses worldwide. However, the president later decided to raise it to 15%, a move that took many by surprise. The tariff increase officially went into effect on Tuesday, February 24, 2026.
International Reactions
The new tariff regime has drawn reactions from countries around the globe. Australia stated that it would examine all options
to avoid the new tariffs, with Trade Minister Don Farrell advocating against the 'unjustified tariffs'. In a similar vein, China urged the U.S. to cancel the unilateral tariffs, arguing they now violate even U.S. domestic law.
The EU's executive body insisted that a deal is a deal
and urged the U.S. president not to impose new tariffs on the bloc's goods. The European Commission also requested “full clarity” on Trump’s intentions following the Supreme Court ruling. Taiwan, on the other hand, sought clarification from Washington about the potential impact on its trade outlook.
Current Status
Despite the Supreme Court’s ruling, Trump’s use of tariffs has been widely debated. Some see it as a tool that has secured strong trade deals and could boost the economy. However, others have criticized the tariffs for raising prices for everyday Americans. The president remains steadfast in his position, stating the tariffs generate massive revenue and strengthen the country’s economic and national security position.
