Israeli Attacks in Gaza: Over 39 Killed and Hundreds Injured Amid Rising Starvation
The ongoing conflict in the Gaza Strip has escalated, resulting in the death of at least 39 Palestinians in the last 24 hours, according to the Palestinian Health Ministry. Additionally, an urgent warning about a starvation crisis in the region has been issued by various NGOs.
Background and Context
The Israeli military re-launched its offensive on Deir al-Balah, a central hub for humanitarian efforts in Gaza, on July 21. Following this, the World Health Organization reported that its aid facilities had been bombed and staff detained by Israeli forces.
The recent attacks have led to high casualties in the region, with reports indicating that entire families have been wiped out in strikes. Most notably, an airstrike on the town of Bani Suhaila resulted in the death of Tariq Muhammad Abu Hajras, his wife, and their five children.
Escalating Tensions and Casualties
The escalating violence has seen the death toll in Gaza reach 61,369 since October 2023, according to the Health Ministry of the Gaza Strip. In the last 24 hours alone, hospital sources report the killing of at least 39 Palestinians and the injury of nearly 500 others due to Israeli attacks.
This includes the death of 21 Palestinians who were seeking aid. Additionally, five Palestinians were killed near an aid centre north of Rafah. It should be noted that some of the victims are still buried under the rubble and in the streets, further complicating the ongoing humanitarian crisis.
Humanitarian Crisis and Starvation
The ongoing Israeli blockade and military operations have led to a severe starvation crisis in Gaza. The Hamas-run Health Ministry reports that 11 people have died from malnutrition recently. Palestinian officials have also reported that six more people died from starvation while trying to get food aid from a distribution site.
The World Food Programme (WFP) and other humanitarian organizations have raised alarms about the mass starvation
spreading across Gaza. An alarming 70% of Palestinians are reportedly too weak from starvation to access aid, according to the Danish Refugee Council (DRC).
Unresolved Investigations and Accountability
Concerns are being raised about the lack of accountability for the escalating violence and humanitarian crisis. According to Action on Armed Violence (AOAV), nine out of ten Israeli military investigations into alleged war crimes or abuses committed in Gaza and the West Bank have ended without any finding of fault or remain unresolved.
Current Status
The current situation in Gaza remains dire, with an escalation of violence and a worsening humanitarian crisis. Despite international condemnation and calls for a cease-fire, the blockade and military operations continue, exacerbating the starvation issue. As the conflict persists, the international community watches with growing concern.
