Trump Proposes Second Round of Talks with Putin and Zelensky
US President Donald Trump has suggested a swift follow-up to the Alaska summit, featuring a meeting between himself, Russian President Vladimir Putin, and Ukraine's Volodymyr Zelensky. The announcement comes amidst a series of high-stakes international discussions, with the US president expressing hope for progress despite acknowledging a potential 25% probability of failure.
Meetings to Address Ukraine Conflict
The initial Alaska summit saw Trump and Putin focusing primarily on the Ukraine conflict. Trump was positive about the summit, telling Fox News that the talks were very productive
and allowed progress on most of the issues discussed. However, he also revealed a 25% chance that the meeting may fail, as reported by Russia Today.
The US President stated that he would hope to determine the success of the meeting within the first 2-5 minutes, relying on his intuition. He emphasized that any agreement must be made with Zelensky, hinting at the possibility of a subsequent meeting involving the Ukrainian President.
Potential Follow-Up Meeting
The prospect of a second meeting was further confirmed onboard Air Force One en route to Anchorage. Trump expressed his interest in another meeting with Putin and Zelensky, stating he would join if wanted. If the meeting goes okay, we'll have a quick second one – I would like to do it almost immediately,
he said at the Kennedy Center in Washington DC.
Trump also mentioned that he would call Zelensky and other NATO leaders to brief them on the Putin meeting, showing a proactive approach to keeping relevant parties informed.
Contrasting Perspectives and Future Developments
Despite expressing optimism for the talks, Trump was tight-lipped about the details in his interview with Fox News' Sean Hannity. As far as I'm concerned, there's no deal until there's a deal,
he said. He declined to share the one big issue
that kept the leaders from agreeing to a ceasefire deal.
Meanwhile, the possibility of future talks in Moscow was also mentioned, with Putin extending an invitation to Trump. The US leader acknowledged the possibility of such a meeting.
Current Status
As it stands, Trump is pushing for dialogue over new sanctions against Russia, according to the White House. Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt told Fox News that what comes after that meeting is up to President Trump,
indicating that the US president's next moves will be determined by the outcomes of the ongoing talks.
Trump believes that both Putin and Zelensky want him to join their potential future meeting. As the international community watches closely, the stakes remain high for all parties involved.
