Israeli Forces Intercept Gaza-Bound Global Sumud Flotilla, Detain Activists on Board
Israeli naval forces intercepted and boarded the Global Sumud Flotilla, a humanitarian fleet of over 40 ships carrying around 500 activists, including notable figures such as Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg. The flotilla, aiming to deliver aid to Gaza and break Israel's blockade, was stopped approximately 70 nautical miles off the Gaza coast, triggering worldwide protest and diplomatic fallout.
Background of the Flotilla
The Global Sumud Flotilla, consisting of more than 40 civilian boats, was carrying about 500 participants including parliamentarians, lawyers, and activists from multiple countries. The flotilla sought to defy Israel's blockade of Gaza and deliver much-needed aid to the war-torn area. The endeavor sparked international tensions, with countries like Italy and Spain dispatching naval ships to accompany the flotilla. The flotilla's mission also received criticism from some quarters, with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni warning that the aid could be delivered without risks and the flotilla might escalate tensions.
Global Response and Detainment of Activists
The interception of the flotilla led to mass demonstrations across the world, diplomatic expulsions, and calls for strikes. In Italy, thousands marched in cities across the country in support of the flotilla. However, Italy later announced it would stop tracking the flotilla with a military vessel. The Australian government expressed deep concern about the safety of its citizens aboard the flotilla. The UK government, however, stated it could not offer diplomatic protection to its citizens onboard the flotilla.
Activists onboard the flotilla posted on social media stating they had been captured by Israeli forces. Among those detained was climate activist Greta Thunberg. David Adler, co-general coordinator of Progressive International, in a pre-recorded video, urged political parties, labor unions, and social movements to mobilize against Israel’s war on Gaza.
Diplomatic Fallout and Ongoing Tensions
The interception of the flotilla has led to diplomatic fallout. Colombian President Gustavo Petro announced the expulsion of all remaining Israeli diplomats following the flotilla's seizure. Spain and Italy have sent naval ships into the Mediterranean Sea to accompany the flotilla. Meanwhile, Turkey called Israel's interception of the flotilla an act of terrorism, and the UK parliamentarians are urging their government to warn Israel against harming Brits on the Gaza flotilla.
As per the latest updates, only three vessels of the flotilla remain operational, with Israeli forces having intercepted the rest. The situation remains tense as the global community watches closely for further developments.
